Mountain View council discusses acquisition of Mountain View Elementary building

The acquisition of the Mountain View Elementary/Middle School building by the town of Mountain View was discussed in their workshop Tuesday night.

According to the discussion, the town may use the facility as a rec center, office space or to move the town’s offices into the building. Council members discussed a feasibility study, which would determine the town’s ability to convert the facility to the town’s use and the ability of Mountain View to maintain and operate the facility.

There was some discussion of removing part of the building and only using part of it. In addition, the council discussed the benefits of maintaining the auditorium, gym and cafeteria. Mayor Scott Dellinger also suggested the possibility of moving the town’s offices into the facility as a way of maintaining the viability of the western side of town.

Bonnie Halford, town clerk, added the benefits of having the town’s offices in the building would help with the operation, as someone from the town would be in the building a lot of the time. She also said children on that side of town utilize the playground instead of walking to the town park.

The discussion also included using some of the classrooms for community classes or groups and the renting of office space in part of the building.

Dellinger said, “If we don’t buy it, they (the school district) will tear it down. They have enough money for demolition.”

The council discussed grants from the Wyoming Business Council as the means for the study and the acquisition and development of the property.

In official action during their regular meeting, the council awarded the bid for the street light replacement to American Electric of Evanston at $49,490. According to Dellinger in the workshop, their bid came in around “$50,000 or more under the others.” He said, American Electric said they “got a smoking deal on the light fixtures” so they were able to pass on the savings.

An ordinance permitting the sale of alcohol in open containers in the bars at 8 a.m. Sunday mornings passed on second reading with councilman Barbara Hamblin voting nay.

According to Thayne Fenus, Bridger Valley Lanes, the change in the ordinance is necessary and will be a benefit to all of the town’s liquor establishments as they currently lose money now as they can only dispense bottled liquor at that hour.

The council also granted the steel workers the right to serve beer at their “Rally in the Valley” on Aug. 21 at the town park. The rally will be from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
