MOUNTAIN VIEW – Fort Bridger music teacher, Vonda Phillips, received the Uinta County School District #4 Teach of the Year for 2013, according to Superintendent of Public Instruction, Cindy Hill.
Phillips a teacher for 14 years, not only teaches in public school, but also offers private lessons sometimes free of charge.
“Vonda’s students leave with an understanding of the bigger world, said Ben Carr, MVHS principal, where Phillips teaches guitar.
Jeff Newton, superintendent of Uinta 34, echoes high praise, “Vonda is able to share her love of music with her students which creates not only a love for Vonda’s classes, but also a love for Vonda as a teacher. Vonda is a master teacher and a true credit to the teaching profession.”
“Every year my third, fourth and fifth graders put on a play to a packed house,” said Phillips. Children and parents leave that evening with a memory and a connection. Sometimes after everyone has left and I’m all alone in the auditorium, I sit down and look at the stage. The energy is gone, and in the silence of the moment, I’m thankful to be a music teacher.”
The yearly play Phillips produces at Christmas is an original that she develops.. It not only plays to a packed house, but it is an overflow crowd as people are also sitting on the steps and in the aisles.
