LYMAN – A “suspicious fire” last Friday, May 17, caused considerable damage to the home of James and Sandra Hoopes.

He said they were unable to live in their home at the present and are waiting information on the cause of the fire. The fire was at 6 p.m. last Friday. Hoopes said the fire department was at his house at 6:10 p.m. Information he received at the scene indicated the fire could be arson.

Hoopes live at 998 County Lane 250, southeast of Lyman. He said he wasn’t at home at the time, but his wife was. Hoopes said Wednesday afternoon, his wife heard an explosion and then the side of the house was engulfed in flames.

Hoopes said his son, Rick, got in touch with him and told him he needed to get home immediately as his house was on fire.

Rusty Megeath, Uinta County fire marshal said later Wednesday afternoon, the fire at the Hoopes home was “suspicious” and he couldn’t “put any accidental source” as the cause of the fire.

The fire is still under investigation, and evidence collected at the site has been sent to the state crime lab in Cheynne, Megeath said. He said he is waiting for the results of the investigation.

Damage of the house was estimated at $10,000. Most of the damage is external, Megeath said, probably an eight-foot square section on the outside where the siding has been burned off. There is also smoke damage on the inside so there will also be costs in cleaning the inside.

“My thoughts were…to be aware of the problem,” Megeath said and he cautioned the Hoopes to be on the lookout for anything suspicious.
