MOUNTAIN VIEW – When Sara and Sara, 10th and 11th graders at MVHS, get up to go to school each morning, they not only have to fight the same issues every other teenager fights when they go to school, but they have to put up with one other big problem: jet lag.

Sara D’Agostino and Sara Alda Justicia are from Milan, Italy, and Madrid, Spain, respectively. They are attending MVHS for a year as foreign exchange students and members of the CIEE exchange program Sara and Sara are living with host families in Mountain View in order to gain more perspective on the American way of life.

The Center on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) lists part of its goals, “To help people gain understanding, acquire knowledge, and develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world."

These two Saras are well on their way to gaining that understanding and acquiring that knowledge. Being over 5,000 miles from home can force a high school student to grow up quickly, but sometimes it is the simple things that get missed the most.

“I miss my best friend and the Italian food. I miss my pizza,” D’Agostino said.

Alda Justicia said, “I miss the healthy food. And my mom and sisters too.”

With modern technology, these students can stay in touch with family and friends almost as much as they want to. With Skype and cell phone apps that allow for international texting, these students can communicate with missed family weekly or even daily.
