Alex Bluemel, of Lyman, won two gold medals at the 2010 Special Olympics National Games held in Lincoln, Neb.
Bluemel won the gold medal in the 100 yard breaststroke and the 100 yard individual medley. Bluemel finished more than seven seconds ahead of the second-place finisher in the individual medley.
She grabbed a silver medal in the 100 freestyle. Bluemel finished less than three seconds behind the gold medalist and 8.73 seconds ahead of the third place finisher. She also competed in the 4x25 freestyle relay.
Team Wyoming earned 13 gold medals, 10 silvers and 14 bronze medals during the games that took place from July 18-23. Bluemel was one of five Wyoming athletes to win three or more medals and was one of two to bring home two gold medals.
Before the National Games, Bluemel said she was very excited to be representing Wyoming and that she couldn’t wait to compete. Bringing home three medals, two of which are gold, is a good way to show that.
