Deer again winter in Mountain View

Posted: Friday, Nov 30th, 2012

Dear Editor,

We have a deer problem in Mountain View and it needs to be addressed before something very serious happens.

A 40 pound dog inside a fenced yard on Evergreen Drive was attacked by deer on the Nov. 11. A small dog was attacked by deer on the Nov. 15, near Pine Street. And our five pound Pomeranian was attacked at 10 a.m. on Nov. 19 in my front yard. Thatís three attacks in eight days, and all three dogs had to go to the veterinarian.

My dog did not provoke the attack and was only outside for a few minutes before he was attacked. Our neighbor saw the three deer and ran out of her house to frighten them off our dog, but was concerned for her own safety since the deer did not leave and looked as though they might attack her. She had to get her car and drive into our driveway to get the deer to leave the dog, putting her car between my dog and the deer.

My dog had four broken ribs a punctured lung. The Veterinarian told me he was very surprised the dog survived the attack.

I called the Mountain View Town office and the Sheriff and both told me it was not their responsibility to control wildlife inside the town. They referred me to the local game warden. I talked to him. In so many words he told me there wasnít much he could do except shoot cracker shells at them to scare them from my yard. This is not a solution to this problem. When the deer get so brazen that it takes an automobile to frighten them, they need to be relocated or euthanized.

The residents of Mountain View need to contact the local game warden and inform him of any deer in their yard that look like they might threaten them or their pets. It will take the community to put pressure on the people responsible to get this problem resolved.
