County Sheriff warns scams have hit area

EVANSTON – Uinta County Sheriff Lou Napoli is warning citizens to be aware of two scam hitting the area.

Several local residents have reported the following scenario.

The potential victim is contacted via telephone and told they have won a lottery or sweepstakes. It’s usually a lot of money. The only catch is, they have to pay an up-front fee or taxes in order to collect the money. The latest twist on this old scam is the perpetrator will tell the victim not to send cash. Instead, they are instructed to purchase a prepaid cash card (such as a Green Dot Money Pak card commonly sold at truck stops) and call back. All the “winner” (victim) needs to do is notify the perpetrator of the card’s authorization code to verify that the victim has actually purchased the card.

The perp assures the victim the prize will then be sent to or delivered to them.

However, once the perpetrator has the authorization code he or she can collect all of the money on the card even though the victim still has physical possession of it. Once the transfer is made, the money is untraceable and cannot be recovered.

The second scam is a telephone scam that specifically targets senior citizens by taking advantage of their loving concern for their grandchildren.

A typical conversation will proceed along these lines: The phone rings but shows an “unknown” number. The senior picks up the phone and hears a sobbing voice:

• If you discover you have been victimized, report it immediately to your local police or file a complaint at www.IC3.gov
