EVANSTON ó On Nov. 29, William Manly appeared in court for a preliminary hearing on four felony charges.

Manly is charged with one count of larceny, one count of robbery and two counts of strangulation, stemming from events that occurred on Oct. 12 and 13.

Lyman Police Officer Aaron Roberts was called to the stand. Roberts was on duty the night of Oct. 13, and testified he was dispatched on a possible assault case on South Franklin Street in Lyman at 9 p.m.

Roberts further testified he interviewed Stacy Pettington at the time of the incident. The officer testified he was told by the victim she had been repeatedly hit and choked, and was in fear for her life.

Pettington was not called to the stand to testify, though Roberts reported she had informed him there was an argument that began Oct. 12 and carried over to the next day. Roberts testified he had been told by Pettington that Manly had twisted her arm and her ankle, and her toes and fingers had been twisted and pulled, and that she had been head-butted and punched in the face, as well as being choked repeatedly.

It was further alleged Manly took a motor vehicle belonging to Pettington and a cell phone.

Judge Michael L. Greer stated he found there was sufficient evidence to hold Manly over for further court proceedings on three of the four charges, but there was insufficient evidence for the larceny charge as filed.

Arraignment in Third District Court on counts one through four is pending. Count five was dismissed.

Manly has been classified as an habitual criminal, and may face two life sentences if convicted on the charges.
