Conservation District seminar: Sprouting is not just for gardening

Posted: Thursday, Jan 17th, 2013

LYMAN — The Uinta County Conservation District is hosting a special sprouting workshop for area residents Jan. 22.

“Each of us is always looking for nutritious foods to feed our families, but in our busy lives, we sometimes are just glad we get something to eat at all,” a release from the agency said. “We wake up in the morning, busily getting the kids off to school and rushing out the door. We do our best with the limited number of hours we have each day to make sure our family is fed and the everyday tasks are completed. How do we eat healthy with such limited time in the day? There is a way. We can squeeze in a little healthy goodness into our everyday eating, and it doesn’t take much time at all.”

Sprouting has been done for over 5,000 years, and has found resurgence in the past 60-plus years, the release said. Sprouting can be done even on the busiest of schedules, and the benefits astounding. Best of all, it can be done on any budget.

“Sprouting is the practice of germinating seeds to be eaten raw or cooked,” according to the release. “Sprouting is all natural. Sprouts can be eaten in many different ways. They are delicious when added to salads, soups, ham fried rice, omelets etc. Sprouts can be eaten without being added to anything and are just as good.”

The Uinta County Conservation District’s sprouting workshop will be held Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 6 p.m. at the conservation district office — the old Lyman library building — located at 204 E. Sage St. The workshop is a beginning class on sprouting. Topics will include the nutritional value of sprouts, why people should sprout, how easy it is and, most importantly, taste testing some different types of sprouts.
