The message on the billboard “America’s open spaces is America’s agriculture” is an attempt to help more people make the connection between the food on their tables and the open spaces they will enjoy as they drive across America.

There is a growing tendency in society to put a high value on open spaces. That value usually comes with an emphasis on preservation. Unfortunately, preservation often means limiting or removing human activity including production agriculture. There are fewer and fewer people who make a connection between the food in the supermarkets and the beautiful open spaces. Many don’t realize that, with few exceptions, all the land that isn’t covered with buildings or pavement is probably important in some way to some segment of agriculture. Many don’t understand that when any segment of agriculture is diminished for any reason, then some portion of open space will take a hit. Farmers and ranchers who work on the land have a personal and financial investment in seeing to it that our open spaces stay healthy and open. The sign is saying, “If we value our open spaces, we must value our agriculture.”

My friends, Deanna Behunin and Ginger Walker, and I are from families who have been involved in agriculture in the Bridger Valley area for several generations. This message is a reflection of the pride we feel in being part of America and its agriculture. Our hope is a few people will read the message and the message will provoke some realization of what it means as they travel across the country either on this trip or maybe the next.
