LYMAN – Nine boys from Lyman’s wrestling team were able to qualify and hit the mat at the state meet last week, Feb. 22-23 in Casper, where two of them battled their way into top five placements.

Senior Dustin Rollins battled it out against a slew of 145-class opponents. Though he took a loss in his first match against a Powell wrestler, he was able to come back strong and take down four opponents in a row, including wrestlers from Wheatland, Douglas, Torrington and Cody. In his final match, which decided third and fourth placements, Rollins took a loss from a contestant from Star Valley, placing him in fourth place overall.

“Wrestling was a way fun year this year,” Rollins said, “Our coaches were awesome, and our little team did pretty good throughout the year. I had an awesome senior year in wrestling, and I’m glad it ended as successful as it did for me.”

Freshman Brodie Douglass made a boom in the 106-class for the Eagles. Douglas opened his tournament with wins in the first two rounds in matchups against Worland and Douglas. His third match was against a competitor from Powell, where Douglass fell a little short, sending him to his final match, which would decide third and fourth place. In the match against a Jackson wrestler, Douglass was able to overcome, finishing in third place for his freshman year.

“The State Wrestling Tournament this year was the most exciting part of the whole wrestling season. It was a great learning experience to help make us better for next year.” Douglass said.

Jericho Birch competed in the 285-class for the Eagles. Birch opened with a first-round win against a Worland wrestler. He was conquered in the second round by an opponent from Douglas. In the third matchup of his tournament, Birch bounced back to steal a win from a Glenrock opponent. He failed in his fourth match against a wrestler from Douglas and was eliminated.
