URIE — Layne Parmenter of School District No. 6 was honored with the National Distinguished Principals award for his accomplishments at the Urie Elementary.

“It was a surprise for sure,” Parmenter said. “It was very overwhelming. It’s something that you dream about happening, and it did.”

The application process began in August, and the district was notified of Parmenter’s award in December.

Family, friends, colleagues and students surprised Parmenter on Jan. 8, with an assembly honoring his accomplishments.

Parmenter said, “Everyone in the world was there.”

“This should be called a national school award,” Parmenter said. “There are so many people that work hard and do good things. I hope that even though my name is on the plaque they see this as a reflection on themselves. I am really grateful and appreciative of the folks that I work with and who come to work every day and put their heart and soul into their job.”
