LHS and MVHS girl wrestlers proved their power on the mat

BRIDGER VALLEY — Both Lyman and Mountain View had a few girls take part in the kick-off of varsity wrestling for girls.

They competed during the season and made it to the girls first state wrestling tournament in Casper earlier this year.

A few girls at both schools toughened up, hit the mat and powered over their opponents in the first ever varsity season for high school girls wrestling in Wyoming. There were five girls from Lyman who competed at the state tournament and two from Mountain View.

Both Braxton Burgener, in the 100, and Raychel Cole, in the 110, of Lyman High School placed in the top six of their respective divisions, taking fifth place.

Lyman did have two girls who took a fifth place finish.

Burgener climbed to the podium by hitting five matches on the mat. The first was a bye in the championship round, which moved her into the quarterfinal against Jayleigh Wright of Green River. Wright took this match with a decision, 4-3. Burgener moved to the consolation bracket where she again received a bye in her first match. In round three, she powered over a girl from Cheyenne South with a fall, moved on to the consolation semi final, was beaten by a wrestler of Thunder Basin and then took the win in her fifth place match by a fall over a wrestler from Cheyenne Central.

Cole also took a fifth place and a stance on the podium. In her first round she took the match by a fall over a wrestler from Campbell County. In her second round, Coe lost by a decision, 10-4, to Hallie Robertson of Star Valley. This moved Cole into the consolation round where she took this match and a second match over wrestlers from Wright and Pinedale by falls. In the semi final match Cole was bested by Keston Johnson of Star Valley by a fall. This put Cole into her final match where she took fifth place in a fall over Gillian Holman of Glenrock.

The other wrestlers from Lyman included Neveah Major in the 115, Randi Cole in the 125 and Clara France in the 135. Major wrestled three rounds winning her second round. Cole wrestled four rounds winning the first two. France wrestled four rounds, receiving a bye for the first and winning one of the last three by a fall.

Mountain View had two girls who competed at the state tournament. They included Hanna Peterson in the 125 and Ashlee Tims in the 145. Peterson received a bye in the first round, then won by falls in the second round with two matches. She lost by a fall in the last round to Alexis Thompson of Pinedale.

Tims won her first two matches in the championship round by falls. In the quarterfinal, Tims lost to Meadow King of Central by a fall. Then in the consolation bracket, she won her first match over Enna Coote of Big Piney and moved on to round five to lose by a fall to Kaelyn Ronneau of Cheyenne East.
