EVANSTON — Wyoming Downs was off to the races with live racing last Saturday, July 4, when it opened with spectators, albeit, with coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

The Downs kicked off the 2020 season with its Freedom Rally last week last Saturday in which all current and former Military and First Responders were honored. According to the Downs, the races were ran before a live crowd of 1,326 spectators. As one of few tracks racing with fans, track officials agreed to meet the COVID–19 safety protocols set by Uinta County and Wyoming State officials when authorization to race was granted on June 6.

Among the requirements was a limit of 1,500 persons in the stands per day.

Additionally, the track management required all horsemen and spectators to have their temperatures taken with non-contact infrared thermometers prior to entering; all employee wore masks; and fans were encouraged to wear masks and maintain social distancing.

The July 4 opener featured 10 races, record purses and a $102,387 handle.

Wyoming Downs will host weekend events, racing every Saturday and Sunday, until the closing day of racing on Aug. 16, which will include hosting an Indian Relay Race, and awarding the Leading Owner, Trainer and Jockey.

Last week’s opening also included a day at the races on Sunday, which was billed as Wyoming Lottery Day at the Races where people could buy their Letter Ticket and Play the Ponies all day.

Wyoming Downs reported the following about the opening day, ““We want to extend our appreciation to the horsemen and fans for working with us to make the season safe,” said Frank Lamb, Wyoming Downs Director of Government Affairs.

“Owner Eric Nelson added, “We know that live horse racing is important to the city and state and the businesses here in Evanston and so we’re really happy we could launch our season on July 4. The horsemen, the fans our staff and the weather all made for a perfect day.”

Wednesday afternoon, Nelson said, “Mask are optional for customers but all employees wear mask and gloves. Social distancing is encouraged. Plenty of room and outside cover seating. So it’s pretty open.”

The designation for this weekend included:

July 11 – Special Olympics – Wyoming Day at the Races

July 12 – Pink Out Day at the Races – Celebrating Cancer Survivors.

Aug. 16 – Last Race Day, hosting Indian Relay Race, and awarding leading owner, trainer and jockey
