COKEVILLE — The Lyman volleyball team picked up where they left off from a year ago with six straight wins to start the season and taking the first-place finish at the Cokeville Invitational.

In pool play on Friday, Lyman defeated Preston, Idaho, in three, 25-17, 25-15, 25-23. The Eagles then faced Grace, Idaho, and took another game in three sets: 25-21, 25-15, 25-23. The Eagles wrapped up the day with a three set win over the Evanston Red Devils: 25-23, 25-17, 25-17.

It was a busy Saturday for Lyman in this tournament when they started the day again at the net in a second game against Grace, Idaho. Lyman took the win in three: 25-19, 25-21, 25-14. In the semi-final round, the Eagles sailed over West Side, Idaho, again in three: 25-22, 25-14, 25-11. That win pitted them against Mountain View in the championship match. In that game which lingered to four sets, Lyman prevailed and the scores for the four sets were 25-21, 21-25, 25-23 23-25, 15-10. Lyman beat Mountain View in the 3A state championship match last year as the two teams battled at the net.

Lyman comes into the season after loosing three-time all-state selection, Brice Hansen, to graduation and all-state middle hitter Kendyll Dickerson.

“Overall I was happy with how the tournament went,” LHS head coach Brecia Hansen said Monday afternoon. “I was also happy with the level of volleyball we were playing this early in the season. My team’s defense and pursuit of the ball was fantastic.

As the teams enter the season this year in 3A SW, Lyman is at the top with a 6-0 overall record, Mountain View second with a 5-1 overall record. Pinedale is in third with 4-1 overall and Lander fourth with 2-3 overall.

At this point of the season, Lyman has the best overall of 3A. Mountain View and SE Douglas both have a 5-1 overall.

With the volleyball season kicking off last week with preseason tournaments, both Lyman and Mountain View were at the Cokeville tournament.

The two Valley teams vied for the championship of the Cokeville tournament with Lyman grabbing the gold ring.
