Make A Child Smile held Tuesday and provided many quilts for children

Posted

LYMAN — The Make A Child Smile played to a packed house Tuesday evening, June 19,  at the Heritage Barn in Lyman.

This is an on-going event with years-and-years of participation by Valley quilters. The event was kicked off years ago at the Uinta County Fair, according to head Ruth Rees, and was anticipated to carry on for two or three years to make blankets for the children at Primary’s Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City.

The project was then moved to Bridger Valley and Valley quilters responded en masse to create and make quilts to give to the children being treated at the hospital. The years turned and the project has provided many, many quilts to the hospital.

Rees noted the quilts provide a bright spot in the lives of the children and their families. She said families sometimes find it is one of their own who needs the special care at Primary Children’s. Tough, for the families as they embark on the new road.

The quilts become family treasures. And, Rees said to the gathered crowd of quilters, “You are God’s Angels.”

Primary Children’s Hospital was 100 years old last year and has catered to children as the years have turned. In the last 20 plus years, Rees has spearheaded the Make A Child Smile in the Valley. With the help of Valley quilters, the group had provided hundreds and hundreds of quilts to Primary Children’s. This year was no exception with the upstairs of the Heritage Barn displaying the quilts hanging on the walls and tables of more quilts, over 200 in all.

Local children who are being treated at Primary Children’s were given a quilt. In addition, those who have been treated and healed were given bags for commemoration.

And, according to the musical production of “Thank God for Kids,” The final verse follows:

“When you get down on your knees tonight

And thank the Lord for His guiding light

Pray they turn out right.

Thank God for kids.

Mmm, Thank God for kids.”
