LHS Eagles suffer heartbreak, lose Homecoming game

Posted

LYMAN — The Lyman Eagles Homecoming game last Friday was almost like a battle of two titans, and of course, one had to lose.

The problem with the outcome of this game, was the home team, the LHS Eagles took the clipping and lost the game in overtime by six points, 12-6.

This week Lyman faces Mountain View today on the Buffalos gridiron. Should be a tough game for both teams as both teams will be up-and-ready to claim the title and bragging rights for the Valley Bowl.

Last week’s game between Lyman and Lovell almost seemed like the clock was turned back as the two teams met last year in the 2A state championship game in November. The Lyman Eagles were able to soar above the Lovell Bulldogs and take the championship by 2, 8-6, a perfect ending for an undefeated season. This time the battle turned the other way, and Lovell took the win following a hard fought, defensive game by both teams.

Lovell was on the scoreboard first, making a touchdown in the first quarter with a 1-yard plunge to the end zone from Davin Crosby to make it 6-0. Lovell couldn’t put the PAT on the board, but they lead by the six points TD.

The Eagles buckled down, made their own touchdown in the second quarter when Gage Nielson found his way into the end zone. This seemed to hype the Eagles and their fans. But, the Eagles also missed their points after so the score was tied 6 to 6 at the half.

Back on the field in the second half both teams were set on making the game their own. Possessions changed back and forth as the two teams tried to head down field, but the opponent held the line. The battle for another point by both teams was waged in both the third and fourth quarters. Some moisture from the air dampened the field, ball and players, but the teams battled on. As the game ended with a tie, the two teams were thrown into overtime and each would try to score to take the win.

Lovell aced a touchdown in overtime when Jared Mangus put the score of the board for the Bulldogs. The Bulldog defense put the squeeze on the Eagles so they couldn’t cross the goal line in overtime, giving the Bulldogs the win, 12-6.

Lovell, defensively tough, has only allowed 20 points in three games this season showing their power on the field. They moved into the #1 spot of the 2A West region a short time ago when Lyman suffered a loss from Bear Lake, Idaho.

Lyman has now been hit with two losses so they have a 2-2 record, which can partly be attributed to a loss of a number of main players from last year through graduation.
