MVHS Buffalos wounded/shutout in Homecoming football game

Posted

MOUNTAIN VIEW — The MVHS Buffalos hosted the Cokeville Panthers last week in the Buffalos Homecoming game, but it turned out the Panthers shutout the Buffalos, 21-0.

The Buffalos had entered the conference game last Friday following three wins for an overall record of 3-1, and a 1-1 conference, with the loss coming against the Lyman Eagles the week before.

They now face the Lovell Bulldogs at Lovell this evening. The Bulldogs have been full of grit and have earned a 5-0 record this year, drubbing all of their competition.

The Buffalos have been in a rebuilding mode last year and this year after loosing top players to graduation. The Buffs are working hard in practices to gel and become a power. With the three wins this year, the Buffalos had already tripled their wins from last year. But the going is tough against teams not in the rebuilding mode.

When Cokeville beat the Buffalos last week, they were bounced up into the top five of the 2A for the first time in three weeks, according to the WyoPreps coaches and media poll. Mountain View was pushed out of the poll. The Lovell Bulldogs earned most of the first place votes.

As for the Buffalos game last week against the Panthers, the Buffalos couldn’t stop the Panthers as they prowled for the win. The Panthers powered up the field in the middle. The Buffs held them twice to keep them going in for a TD, but they Panthers still managed to carry the ball into the end zone. The PAT was blocked by the Buffalos so the score was set at 6-0, Panther favor.

Numerous flags were thrown in the game against both teams. One for illegal procedure against the Panthers pushed them back five yards. The their quarterback Landon Walker was sacked by the Buffs, and the Panthers lost another three yards.

Mountain View recovered a fumble by Cokeville and the Buffs took over in the Panthers’ territory. At the end of the first quarter the score was 6-0 in favor of the Panthers.

In the second quarter, the Buffalos took to the air to try to gain yardage. Pass interference against the Panthers edged the Buffalos downfield. Then an interception put the ball back in Cokeville’s hands. In this quarter, both teams weren’t making it into the end zone. When Cokeville had possession, they tried for a field goal, but the magic wasn’t there so no points. Mountain View also tried for a field gal with 1:20 left in the first half.

Cokeville tried a long pass, which didn’t connect. Set to punt the ball away, the Panthers faked the punt, turned it into a pass, raced up the sideline and into the end zone. This was followed by a 2-point conversion so the score was Panthers 14 and Buffalos 0. The Buffalos had possession at the half, but no time to capitalize on their possession.

In the second half, the Panthers continued to hold the Buffalos scoreless while racking up more points. The Buffalos tried rushing and passing, but the plays didn’t come together to make yardage and score points. The Panthers capitalized on a pass to make it into the end zone. This was followed by a PAT. The score at the end of the third quarter was in the Panthers’ favor, 221-0/ so the Panthers edged their score up to 21.

In the fourth quarter MV’s Linford kept the ball and rushed up to the 30-yard line. A flag on the, moved the Buffs back. Linford was sacked on another play. Cokeville intercepted the ball in the end zone so they took over on the 20-yard line. Possessions changed back-and-forth in the fourth. When the game ended, Cokeville had the win, 21-0
