CASPER — The MVHS track and field team was a major presence at the 3A state championship meet last week in Casper, bringing home second pace for both the guys and gals.

A significant event for MVHS was the 4x800 relays teams for both the guys and gals took first place at the meet.

In addition, Mountain View captured both the boys and girls pole vault championships. To top it off, both winners were in the same family. Connor Micheli and Mylie Micheli lived up to their potential and took the titles. Mylie hit her best mark by soaring 10 feet.

These athletes and the athletes from Lyman High School made the rest of the state take a look at the quality of these southwest athletes. Tough on the track, and touch on the field.

The state track meet started in Casper on Thursday with snow, rain and cold temperatures. For the most part, this has been the way most of the track meets have fared this year, and the athletes have bundled in blankets and coats when not competing.

In the girls division, Powell grabbed the first place finish. But it wasn’t a walk-in-the- park for the Lady Panthers. In fact, the title went down to the last race. Mountain View was leading the girls division with 90 points and Powell second with 86. The Lady Buffs didn’t field a team in the 4x400 relay finals so Powell took the advantage by winning the race and earning 10 points to win their second consecutive team title. A hard knock for the Lady Buffs, but they still walked away as winners.

In assessing Mountain View’s rise to the top at the state track meet, MVHS head coach Joel Giorgis said Monday afternoon, the teams just got better and better as the season progressed with multiple athletes hitting their best records going into state.

“I will say we didn't have a perfect state meet, but the athletes both boys and girls, competed hard to the last event through snow, rain and sunshine. Like always, I’m very proud of them.

“Something unique,” Giorgis added happened at the state meet, “both boys and girls 4x800 teams are state champions in a dominating fashion.

Ladies from both Mountain View and Lyman placed first in some events. In the high jump, Mya Hutchngs of Mountain View took first in the high jump, and Myie Micheli took first in the pole vault. Lyman Lady Eagle Sage Bradshaw took first in the long jump.

The race for the guys team championship came down to defending champ Lander and Mountain View. Lander entered the 4x400 with 88 points to Mountain View’s 85.5 points.

The Tigers never gave the Buffalos a chance to close the gap. They crossed the line in 3:28.55, while Mountain View finished sixth in the race and taking second place at the state meet.

Team scores for the guys teams were Lander in first with 98 points, followed by Mountain View in second with 88.5 points. Powell was third with 79.5 points, and Lyman 13^th out of 15 teams.

Mountain View’s Connor Micheli continued to own the vault as he took first place. Lyman’s Alex Bradshaw took first in the long jump.
